Mr. Tate Searched For Killers
December 4, 1969
Los Angeles (AP) - The father of actress Sharon Tate says he resigned as an
Army Intelligence lieutenant colonel and masqueraded as a hippie in a four-month
search for his daughter’s killers.
Youthful-looking Paul J. Tate, 46, told the Los Angeles Times he grew a
mustache and beard and mingled with drug addicts, lived in communes and
cautiously questioned various drifters for clues.
Tate was interviewed Wednesday as police across the country rounded up
certain members of a hippie style clan wanted in the investigation of the Aug. 9
deaths of Miss Tate and four others in her home.
"I guess I’ve seen just about everything in hippie communes while checking
out drug angles," said the father, a 23-year Army career man who lives in
suburban Palos Verdes Peninsula. "Just the same, I hope nobody prejudices the
case."
He said anything he knew would be told "at the proper time" and declined to
state how successful he had been on his search. But he said the arrests in the
case had "taken a great weight off my mind."
Tate said he thought pretrial publicity from attorney’s and others in the
case had been excessive, saying "You never know for sure whether you have an
airtight case."
He said some reports carried in news media were inaccurate and, without
elaborating, said: "Much has been said about Sharon which is just not true.
"Imagine how you would feel if people who never knew or met your daughter
professed to be experts on her conduct, knew all about her and said all sorts of
degrading things about her," he said
"My wife is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. My other daughter has been
extremely upset. We are a very close family."
