CharlieManson.Com Newsletter, August 30, 2001
I usually try to do the newsletter on Saturday, but may be busy, so I'm
getting it out a bit early this time.
I assume everyone received last night's special edition newsletter. I wanted to
get it out quickly since it dealt with a weekly tabloid that might disappear
from the shelves before the regular newsletter mailing.
Many of you have probably heard rumors of a new Manson related movie. I think
this has been going around since the "Manson In His Own Words" book was released
because the cover stated "Soon to be a major motion picture." Another rumor
that has bounced around is that Johhny Depp has been wanting to play Manson in a
movie. And yet another rumor is that Oliver Stone is going to be involved.
Back in May, it was announced that Propaganda Films had bought the rights to
Vincent Bugliosi's book, "Helter Skelter." This book was, of course, previously
filmed as a made-for-TV movie back in 1976. That version was produced by
Lorimar Pictures which was bought by Warner Brothers in 1986. That tied up the
rights to the book. From what I gather, the new film will be done by Propaganda
but distributed by Warner Brothers. I've also seen the production company
listed as "Platinum Productions/Propaganda Films." Propaganda is perhaps best
known for the movie "Being John Malkovich."
The screenplay will be written by Bugliosi, who will also serve as Executive
Producer. It is known that the producer will be Kurt Fethke, who has made
statements to the press about the film.
The main controversy at this time involves music written by Manson. Producers
know that it is an important part of the Manson legend. But they also know that
many people might be offended if they use his works. Guns 'n Roses did a Manson
song back in 1993 and did draw some criticism. Plus, there was even some court
action to insure that Manson would not receive any of the significant writer's
royalties (I believe they went to Frykowski's son because he filed a suit
shortly after the murders).
Fethke has stated that he doesn't want to glamorize Manson and inspire lots of
"kids" to start wearing Manson shirts. With Bugliosi involved, I suspect it
will take a very negative approach toward Manson.
This week's "Globe" says there will be a $60 million movie. An English website
reports a figure of 40 million pounds, which I think is a similar amount.
Either way sounds like a lot of money to me!
As far as the Johhny Depp rumor, I think that is all it is. He did star in "The
Ninth Gate" which was directed by Roman Polanski and supposedly they fought over
everything. He has supposedly insisted that he is NOT going to play Manson in
any movie
The producers have put up a very tiny webpage for the movie. It basically says
"Coming Soon."
